How it works
- Choose the range: the first number is never bigger than the one you pick.
- Choose with or without regrouping (borrowing), and the answer or a missing number.
- Press New sheet for different problems and Print. The answers print on a second page.
Regrouping, step by step
Without regrouping, every digit on top is at least as big as the one below it, as in 58 − 23. With regrouping, at least one column needs a ten from the next one, as in 52 − 27. Practicing the two separately and then mixed is a reliable path.
Missing numbers
Problems like 15 − __ = 9 or __ − 4 = 8 make children think about how subtraction undoes addition, instead of following a procedure.
Questions and answers
Can the answer be negative?
No. The second number is always smaller than or equal to the first.
What does “up to 100” mean for subtraction?
The numbers in the problem are at most 100, so 92 − 47 can appear but 105 − 20 cannot.
Is borrowing the same as regrouping?
Yes. “Borrowing” is the older name; “regrouping” is what most US schools say today.
