How it works
- Choose the denominators, from halves up to twelfths.
- Choose circles, bars or both, and the task: name the fraction or shade it.
- Print 8, 12 or 16 shapes per page, with the answer key.
Equal parts
A fraction only makes sense when the whole is cut into equal parts. The bottom number says how many parts there are; the top number says how many are shaded.
Circles and bars
Circles look like pizzas or cakes, and bars like chocolate. Seeing the same fraction in both shapes helps children understand that 3/4 is the same amount whatever the shape.
Questions and answers
Which denominators can I choose?
From 2 to 4, to 6, to 8 or to 12. Twelfths are best on bars, where the parts stay easy to count.
Can the shaded parts be split up?
No, the shaded parts are always next to each other, so counting stays simple.
